All our ecologists are members of, or applicants to, the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and work to the Institute’s Code of Professional Conduct, British Standard BS42020 and best practice guidelines.

Geckoella is an ecological and geological consultancy based in south west England and working across the UK. We are offering an excellent early career ecology employment opportunity – Assistant Ecologist / Ecological Clerk of Works
Your work will be about the wildlife and your team, across a wide range of projects and clients. Half of the role will be embedded within a major infrastructure project working across a wide range of ECoW tasks: an ideal opportunity to fast-track your CV & career. You will survey and report on a range of protected and notable species and habitats and will learn how to do this effectively. The other half will be across a wide range of other Geckoella projects from surveys, mitigation and BNG for small developments to major Nature Recovery schemes for NGOs and SSSI condition assessment monitoring for Natural England.
You may also assist with Geckoella’s community and geology work, for example on sustainable coastal management, building stones, geological site surveys and soil analysis, and those with aptitude and interest will have the opportunity to develop rounded experience across environmental disciplines and tasks.

You will be supported to gain the skills and tickets needed to progress, and we pride ourselves on investing in our close-knit team. Working alongside and learning from more experienced ecologists, you will have the opportunity to grow the role and progress in your career. Tailored CPD includes structured and unstructured ‘on the job’ learning alongside experienced ecologists, benchmarked against the CIEEM competency framework and membership grade structure. Support for botanical training is prioritised, together with structured support for obtaining protected species licences.
Alongside this, Geckoella encourages a good work/life balance with flexible working and full TOIL. The post can be carried out primarily home working or hybrid from the workshop base in Watchet, Somerset.
All equipment is provided, as well as a home-working allowance and mileage from home workbase.
The Assistant Ecologist / Ecological Clerk of Works position comprises a fixed term contract of 37.5 hours per week to start ASAP until the end of September 2025 (with possible extension). There is likely to be working away from home in the UK, although the majority of your work would be in the south-west, especially in Somerset.
Essential skills
- An appetite to learn and develop ecological survey and data management, analysis and reporting skills
- Ecological survey and reporting experience
- Excellent IT skills incl. mobile devices.
- Excellent communication skills across a range of media
- Adaptable, ability to use initiative and work on your own with minimum supervision in a dynamic environment
- Demonstrable understanding of self-organisation, team working and task delivery
- H&S, and ability to contribute to strong safety and quality culture
- Degree in relevant Ecology/Environmental Discipline or equivalent scientific skills and expertise
- Fluent English
Essential Practical requirements
- Home workbase with excellent broadband within 1.5 hrs of Geckoella’s Watchet Workbase (Somerset)
- Full UK driving licence and access to car for business use
- Ability to carry out fieldwork including during unsociable hours at sites throughout the UK in sometimes physically demanding environments
- Current legal right to work and live in the UK
Desirable
- Specialism / interest in a species, group or aspect of wildlife
- QGIS experience in spatial analysis and presentation
- Some botanical ID skills, including assisting with habitat classification for UKHabs
- Some protected and notable species survey experience
- Knowledge of BNG
- Experience in the use of statistical packages (eg: R-studio) and /or programming
- CSCS card
- member of CIEEM at the appropriate grade
Salary in the range of £22.5-23.5K dependent on skills and experience.

Geckoella is an independent Somerset based consultancy specialising in expert ecological, geological and built heritage advice for the public and private sectors. Our work spans the full cycle from policy development to technical advice, land management, survey and monitoring across terrestrial, wetland and marine ecosystems and features. We work with a broad range of clients, including developers seeking advice with regard to planning requirements, surveys of nature reserves for NGOs, landscape-scale nature recovery mapping for the public sector, and specialist advice for both local and central government. We are a ‘work from home’ company, but the successful candidate must be within 1.5hours of our base in Watchet, Somerset where we have regular team meetings and events.
Salary band £30-£40K depending on experience and qualifications. Full or part-time. Permanent.
