Geckoella’s Geologist Jamie Foster has been busy heading up geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) surveys across England this year, including river channels exposures in Carlisle (Cumbria) and coastal exposures closer to home in Somerset, within the Blue Anchor to Lilstock Coast SSSI.
These sites exhibit some of the best examples of Britain’s geology. Monitoring these sites helps Natural England (the government’s adviser for the natural environment in England) to conserve and enhance them for future generations.
Drones have become a standard ‘tool in the geologists’ toolbox’ for surveys such as this, allowing us to inspect geological features that are out of reach in cliff faces, understand the context of the site with landscape photography, or generate more detailed datasets including orthomosaics and digital elevation models.
